Depends on what type of engineering you do 🙂 For me, it’s 100% desk work; all my work I do on a computer in my office or in meetings. But this is not always the case. My last job, for example, was perhaps 50% at my desk and 50% in a cleanroom. For other jobs, it might be nearly all done in a lab or workshop. It’s worth saying that desk work isn’t as dull as it might sound at first; we can do some cool stuff and design some fun systems while sitting down 🙂
I probably spend 50% of my time at my desk, but that might include designing some electronics, or doing some programming. There are always documents and papers to write, so other people know what you’ve been doing.
