I play keyboards, badly and rely my computer to do the hard bits.
There is an interesting, deep, connection between music, maths and engineering. Many of the techniques we use to analyses time varying data (e.g. radio waves received by your mobile phone) have a lot in common, maths-wise, with the effects in modern music production. I have a student working with me at the moment on her final year project and we are designing and building digital effects and instruments on the computer. Think autotune, vocoders and similar effects used by Daft Punk on tracks like ‘Get Lucky’.
