Because you want to! Not everyone needs to be scientists/engineers… Some people really like science and some people really don’t. For a career, you need to pick something you want to do. I thought I wanted to work with cars all my life when I was 17, then when I turned 19 I’d had enough and wanted to do something else so I went into engineering which I am really enjoying! I’m very happy I tried this new thing rather than staying in the place I started or else I wouldn’t be here today!

You want to learn how things work, you want to learn about the universe.
You want to have a job that is challenging, exciting, and try make Earth a better place. Discover new things no-one knew about before.

What are your motivations, what is your dream?

Because you want to know why and how things work. And this could mean how a car engine works, or why I don’t fall through the floor and end up at the centre of the Earth, or what we mean by ’empty’ space or why maths seems to be so good at helping us to describe the universe or

I hope you get the idea! If this is the sort of stuff that you find interesting then scientist could be a good choice for a job.

For one description of what science is about I like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYPapE-3FRw by the amazing Richard Feynman.

      1. Because you will understand the world better
      2. Because you can make good money and live comfortably
      3. Because it’s fun
      4. So you can make intelligent comments to your friends
      5. So you can understand your friends’ intelligent comments 😉
      6. Because you can improve the lives of people
      7. So you can travel the world
      8. Because you get to work in a comfortable workplace
      9. So you can study and build cool things

And, as the other engineers said:
      10. Because you want to 🙂
