Hmm, difficult question! I think my favourite ones would be the first modern astronomers, like Johannes Kepler, Nicolaus Copernicus or Tycho Brahe. They did some real hard work trying to work out how space works at a time no one really had any idea.

There was also a guy I like a lot called Carl Sagan. He was a good space scientist, but the reason I like him so much is because he was good at explaining what is in space to the rest of us, which is also important 🙂

I really like Professor Stephen Hawking because he can write down his research in a very accessible way, such as the book The Universe in a Nutshell.

Even though details of their life and research are lost through history I’m inspired by Hypatia and Eratosthenes. Can you find who they were and what are they famous for?

      Newton and Einstein.

Newton got all sorts of stuff about the Universe correct, worked out a theory of gravity and helped develop a very important branch of maths called calculus. Unfortunately , he was a bit unpleasant as person apparently, but his achievements are seriously impressive. It took Einstein in the last century to actually correct Newton’s ideas (though Newton’s stuff is still OK most of the time).

Galileo, as he made sense of what he was seeing and then stuck to his analysis.

I was also hooked into space by Carl Sagan – his book ‘A Pale Blue Dot’ is one of my favourites.
