I always wanted to find out how things work, build and improve things, be at the forefront of science and explore new ideas. There are many paths to this dream, I always liked the idea of engineering because of my granddad who was a civil engineer but I think I made the choice of engineering over physics during my university application while visiting departments and talking to people.
I guess I didn’t know I wanted to be an Engineer until I was actually doing the job – that is because I didn’t know what an engineer could do! I always wanted to do something technical and to make or invent new things, so that is an engineering role, but I studied Physics as I loved science and hadn’t thought about studying engineering. Not that that was a bad thing – as I am now doing a job I love.
I learned I wanted to be an engineer after going to college to be an auto mechanic. I felt that fixing cars was ‘too easy’ – somebody designed and built it so how hard can it be to fix? I wanted to be the guy designing that car (originally) so that I didn’t have to scrape my knuckles fixing it – I’d rather work less hours, get paid more and stay clean!
Pretty early on, though I also studied physics (still do to a certain extent). I blame lego and the Voyager missions to the outer Solar System for driving my current interests. I’ve wanted to understand what makes stuff go, be it a computer program, robot or engine.
I always knew I was going to be an engineer. I played with lego when I was growing up a lot and it seemed natural. I knew I was going to be a space engineer when a space-themed wallpaper was put up in my room. I fell asleep each night staring at a wall of spacecraft and asteroids!
