Very good question. I think that the biggest problem is communicating what they know to all the non-scientists. Although science is very open, and you can basically look up anything you like, not everyone does this. Some areas of science are quite complex and sometimes require some training to fully understand which many people don’t have. That’s why science classes in school are so important! Projects like I’m a Scientist, get me out of here! are great in that you can talk directly to people who are doing the science and get the explanations from them. Unfortunately, lots of people, both scientists and non-scientists, accidentally or deliberately communicate science facts badly, which can cause people to be confused! Trying to clarify what science is doing, what has been discovered, and what the limits of current knowledge are is something we need to do much better..

While Alex’s point is excellent, I’m going to answer a different interpretation of your question.

I think one of the biggest challenges is energy storage. We need to find ways better then batteries to store a lot of energy in a small space. Apart from that sustainable energy generation.

The biggest problems to solve are energy, climate change and food production. But for scientists themselves, it is about securing funding easily to enable the to spend more time doing research.
