      Energy storage.

It is the biggest challenge right now. We need much better way to store energy on the small and large scale. Batteries are just simply not good enough. Also sustainable energy generation.

I think dealing with people’s junk will be a big challenge, we live in such a society that everyone needs to keep buying more and more stuff. All of the ‘old’ stuff will have to go somewhere eventually, burying it in the ground and hoping it goes away isn’t the best solution and many things are very hard if not impossible to reuse (right now – hopefully future engineers will find something useful to do with all our discarded junk!)
I think true sustainability will be the biggest challenge, so we are living ‘within our means’.
