Clearly, bullying is not nice but does happen to a lot of people. I found it hard at one point because I was doing well in my classes and some of my friends at the time didn’t like that. But, I was able to make friends with a new group of people (who appreciated each other for who we are, and our skills and interests) and 18 years on we are still very good friends. As you continue with the things you enjoy (for me that was science) then you find more and more people with similar interests, so always remember that there are other people who will enjoy the same things you do.

Not really, but I was very lucky in that most of my friends were as smart or smarter than I am, and there were a group of us with similar interests. Also, the school I was at really didn’t tolerate bullying and that helped a lot. Bullying in any situation is unpleasant and unacceptable.

The thing to remember, I found this at the time and looking back now, is that you eventually leave school behind you and meet up with people with similar interests at university, college or work and this helps a lot.

I got bullied a lot in school 🙁 I don’t know if it was caused by smartness, I think more likely it was because I was afraid and didn’t stand up for myself. I didn’t like school much because of it. At University things got a lot better as I was surrounded by better people, and that was the first time I felt part of a real group. It’s been good ever since, I found my confidence and now know how to handle bullies. They do try to pop up in life from time to time, but there are things you can do to stop them being a problem. Luckily, the engineering world I find to be a caring and supporting one.
